Weak Links:  Grip Strength

by Troy Anderson of the Blue Collar Golfer

There are few guarantees in my business.

1. The majority clients will still eat like crap no matter how much great information and guidance they get about nutrition
2. About 90% of the clients I consult with lack any grip strength what so ever.

Number 2 is probably due to the fact that very few people actually work with their hands anymore.  As a matter of fact, the heaviest thing most American's hold with their hands on a daily basis is probably their grande latte from Starbucks.

How does this relate to golf?
Well, you have to grip a club, now don’t you?

Grip and golf are much like the story of Goldie Locks; it has to be "just right."  Not too loose, not too tight, just right.
In most instances, in order for golfers to get their grip “just right” they need some improvement in their grip.

So I thought I would share a quick and easy tip for increasing grip strength.

I simply like to wrap a small towel around the handles of the dumbbells that I am using.  Not only does this improve grip strength but in many instances, results in better training stimulus for the musculature being directly trained.  Killing two birds with one stone so to speak, you can’t beat that for efficiency.

Here are some photos showing how I set this up.

This method is most effective when used with drills such as: rowing, pressing, lunges, etc... any drill where the dumbbell is suspended and gravity is acting upon it.

A couple of additional benefits aside from improved grip strength is that you will have improved kinesthetic awareness in your hands aka "feel" which is very beneficial in the game of golf; and your colleagues won't be able to laugh at your "dead fish" hand shake any more.

Until next week, keep it simple.
