A
Swing to Save Your Back
By Bill Hartman, “Your Golf Fitness Coach”
If you’ve played golf with any level of back pain,
join the 80% of other golfers who have done the same.
All is not lost.
You can still play, and play well without pain by making some small
adjustments to your swing. You’re going
to need to do 3 things:
Number One…Reduce your “X-factor”
By reducing the differential
between the hips and shoulders, you’ll reduce torque and strain on the spine.
Don’t be afraid that your shorter swing will reduce
your driving distance. There’s some
pretty solid research out there that shows you can shorten your back swing by
as much as 20% without a loss of clubhead speed at impact.
Number Two…Forget about your “Reverse C”
By adopting a follow-through
that ends with the spine perpendicular to the ground, you can reduce the stress
associated with the hyperextension of the spine.
Number 3…Get in shape for golf
Are you surprised by
this? I mean c’mon. Look at the name of this website. I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t
mention your golf fitness program.
In all seriousness, there are numerous studies over
the last few years that have shown how beneficial a properly designed
golf-specific fitness program can be in the prevention of injuries and in the
improvement of on-course golf performance.
Your golf fitness program should include exercises
which enhance golf-specific flexibility, foundational and specific strength,
and power to increase clubhead speed.
