A Simple Progression To Better Golf Posture

There are a myriad of postural problems that golfers can have, and about 90% of the golfers that I have worked with have some sort of postural deviance.  The reason is that having “good posture” requires a very complex system of muscles, bones, and connective tissue to work together to perform a variety of movements.  Anytime that one of these pieces starts to become weak or over-powered by one of the others, you begin to run into a posture problem, and that’s where things get a little dicey.

You might be thinking, “Yeah, great, I have a posture problem but I still play good golf”.

Not so fast bud.

You may recall a few weeks back we looked at developing a better golf stance. Well posture plays a big role in whether or not you are able to get into and maintain your golf stance throughout your round, and we all know how important your stance is.

So what are the repercussions of having poor posture rear its ugly head during your round of golf?

1.    You will still start to experience discrepancies in your swing
2.    You will start compensate for these discrepancies; when compensation start to occur injury potential tends to increase.

This doesn’t sounds like the start of a fun round of golf to me.

The development of poor posture is usually something that goes by unnoticed until it is too late.  So sure, you can probably play “good golf” for awhile, but like the saying goes “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Hence, I thought I would share a few “in the trenches” drills that have worked well for my clients.

In the video below, the drills are in order of least complex to most complex, so start with the “easiest” first.

Exercise Protocol:  1-2 sets of 10-20 repetitions as frequently as desired.

At first, you might have some difficulty being able to “feel” or getting  your muscles to “work”; but some consistent practice and you should well on your way to preventing posture problems.
